Gavin doesn’t play for the charts; he plays for the heads. His sound is built on the philosophy of proper house and techno—that rare space where tech-house stays technical and techno keeps its soul. Whether he’s leaning into heady minimalism, deep dubby grooves, or banging rave energy, Gavin’s sets are a direct rejection of the formulaic, cheesy “tech house” and “hard techno” tracks that’ve flooded the post-COVID party world. He’s spent over two decades honing a style that’s sophisticated, floor-filling, and distinctly Varitech… Not only in the tracks played, but the way he plays them
His obsession started in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 80s and 90s. Long before he could afford Technics 1200s, he was mastering the “pause-button” edit—spending entire weekends splicing radio mixes onto a dual cassette deck with surgical precision. That early dedication, inspired by the film Juice, the technical art of DJ Premier, then ultimately to the rave sound championed by DJ Dan, Carl Cox, and Josh Wink, built the foundation for his uncanny on-the-fly programming. From his first slave-wage Gemini mixer to his first official gigs in 2001, Gavin’s journey’s been defined by a refusal to settle for the norm
Known for his Phuntek sound—a unique blend of West Coast minimal and big-room energy—Gavin’s a DJ’s DJ. He isn’t interested in sounding like whoever’s popular; he’s interested in keeping things fresh, authentic, and relentless. Today, that vision extends beyond the decks through his label, Rareform Recordings, and his work with Phuture Global Radio, where he continues to champion the underground sound that’s defined his life since that very first Eric B & Rakim record with the 24/7 worldwide house and techno radio
